Wang Neng, an Alumnus of Grade 1988 Was Selected into the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the CPC

Wang Neng is a chair professor of finance at Columbia University’s Business School, with a doctorate in finance from Stanford University. He is also a research fellow at the US National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), dean of School of Finance, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and a visiting professor at Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business. He is selected into the Thousand Talents Plan held by Organization Department of the Central Committee of the CPC.

Wang graduated from the Class for Talented Youths at Nanjing University in 1992, with a major in physics and chemistry. He obtained his master’s in chemistry from California Institute of Technology in 1995. In 1997, he obtained another master’s in international relations and Asia-Pacific studies from University of California, San Diego, and a doctorate in finance from Stanford University in 2002.

He taught at Graduate School of Business at the University of Rochester. Beginning in 2004, he taught at Columbia University. In 2007, he was promoted to tenure, as one of the youngest tenures at Columbia Business School. He was director of Department of Finance, Columbia University in 2008. He was dean of School of Finance, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, in 2009.

His research focuses on corporate finance, macroeconomics, asset pricing theory, private placement and hedge fund, entrepreneur financial economics, investor protection, corporate governance, consumers savings, investment, and consumption, distribution and inequality of incomes, economic growth, business cycle, financial friction, dynamic investment and financing, mobility of capital, systemic risk and management of financial institutions, and real estate finance.

He has published many papers on top international journals in economics and finance and served as chief editor and editorial board member of several journals in finance and economics. He has won many academic awards in finance, including Outstanding Financial Scholar Award from Arizona State University and Smith-Breeden Distinguished Paper Award from Journal of Finance.

He has been a visiting scholar, visiting professor, or distinguished professor at colleges and universities and financial institutions, such as Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, Advanced Institute of Finance, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Peking University, and Zhejiang University. He teaches courses for MBA, masters of finance, and doctoral students in entrepreneur finance and private placement, fixed assets income and markets, financial institutions and risk management, real estate finance, the theory of corporate finance, and dynamic financial theory.

Wang Neng was born in Dangtu, Anhui province, in 1973.
