A scientific lecture “From X-Rays to Quarks: An Introduction to Particle and Nuclear Physics” was given by Professor Cao Shanshan of Shandong University, who is also an alumnus of Kuang Yaming Honors School of Nanjing University, in the Guosheng Lecture Hall on the afternoon of July 5.
Mr. Cao pointed out two main categories of today’s physics: one was condensed matter physics, and the other particle and nuclear physics. The lecture was an introduction to the latter, which was also what Mr. Cao specialized in.
Considering a majority of students had not yet been exposed to quantum mechanics, Mr. Cao spoke in an approachable way, making it easier for the students to understand. Focusing on the journey of particle exploration, he narrated a colorful scientific epic.
Starting from the discovery of electrons and other well-known scientific history, Mr. Cao led the students deep into neutrinos, mesons, magnetic moment of protons, quarks, and Higgs bosons, presenting an all-encompassing and well-organized history of scientific progress.
During the lecture, Mr. Cao also reminded the students from time to time of the importance of developing proper scientific literacy. The students were expected to recognize the close link between scientific discovery and historical context, properly understand the force of technological progress to drive scientific exploration, and feel gratitude to the remarkable contributions made by technicians to the scientific progress.
At the end of the lecture, Mr. Cao interacted with the students and answered their queries. He also encouraged them to work harder to explore the scientific world.
